YOU Can Make a Difference in 2010!
1. Compost. Millions of tons of food and yard waste takes up space in landfills every year when it can be reused as natural fertilizer in your garden. Many web sites can get you started or contact the local Penn State Extension office for more information.
2. Landscape with native plants. Native plants are adapted to local climate conditions and therefore require less frequent watering. By choosing plants that naturally grow in the area, you will save water, reduce energy use, and help local wildlife that rely on these plants for their survival. Contact our Watershed Specialists to learn more.
3. Install a rain barrel and/or rain garden. Help to reduce stormwater runoff and promote groundwater recharge with these simple additions to your home. Attend our workshop in March or call us for more information.
4. Check your faucets and change a light bulb. Save gallons of water a day simply by fixing that leaky faucet. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs instead of the traditional incandescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer, saving you time and money.
5. Become an active member in your local watershed association. Columbia County has active watershed groups throughout the county. Contact our Watershed Specialists to find out what watershed you live in.
